Duties:

  • This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings and Grounds, Facilities Operations Division, Plumbing Branch. The incumbent serves as a working supervisor and assists the supervisor in providing administrative and technical supervision necessary to accomplish the work of the branch.

    More specifically, the incumbent assists in establishing guidelines and performance expectations for the staff; observing workers' performance; and evaluating employee performance. Demonstrates and assists in conducting work performance critiques; evaluating employee performance; resolving informal complaints and grievances; and developing work improvement plans. Assists in ensuring that subordinates are properly trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations.

    Assists in furthering the goals of equal employment opportunity (EEO). Assists in promoting nondiscriminatory practices. Supports and communicates EEO policies, plans and programs for the employees.
  • Assists in planning, laying out, coordinating, scheduling and directing work assignments orally or through work orders, building plans or blueprints.

    Inspects piping system equipment and fixtures using diagnostic techniques to locate the problem. Inspects and troubleshoots piping systems, identifies irregularities and existing and/or potential problems; identifies source and nature of system malfunctions.
  • Assembles, installs and repairs replacement pipes, fittings and fixtures of steam heating, water, sanitary, and storm drainage systems as well as low-pressure air systems in accordance with specifications and plumbing codes. Installs and repairs commodes, lavatories, showers, water heaters, hot water tanks, water pumps, condensate pumps, sewer pumps, sludge pumps, sump pumps, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
  • Installs and modifies high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems (hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating and steam-generating systems). Installs and repairs steam generators, vacuum, air, water, and condensate pumps, radiators, automatic and manual valves and flash and expansion tanks.

    Reads and interprets blueprints, layout sketches, manufacturers' literature and specifications for sizing, estimating, installing and repairing new or existing piping systems.
