  • The Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), U.S. Department of Justice is responsible for ensuring that recipients of federal financial assistance from OJP, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) comply with civil rights laws that prohibit unlawful discrimination in the delivery of services or benefits, or in their employment practices.

Duties:

  • Reviews proposed legislation, regulations, and policies on civil rights law matters. Prepares written documents including memoranda, reports, advisory opinions, and implementation recommendations. Addresses civil rights law issues including discrimination affiliated with age, disability, education, employment, equal protection, ethnic group, gender, housing, national origin, public accommodations, race, religion, sexual orientation, or speech.
  • Provides professional legal advice on civil rights law and related services to a range of individuals within DOJ, in other federal agencies, or in private industry. Conducts compliance reviews and complaint investigations, and provides legal analysis and recommendations related to enforcement of civil rights laws.
  • Serves as an organizational or agency representative for discussions regarding civil rights law. Addresses civil rights law issues including discrimination affiliated with age, disability, education, employment, equal protection, ethnic group, gender, national origin, public accommodations, race, religion, sexual orientation, or speech.

    Maintains liaison with individuals in DOJ OJP, in other federal agencies, in state and local governments, and in private industry. May provide liaison services to Congress.
