Pathways Internship Program
The Internship Program is a new program for students who are currently enrolled in high school, home school, trade school, college or other qualifying educational institutions. It provides a path for students to explore the work of the federal government and get paid while they are still in school. The Internship Program replaces the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP).
In order to be eligible for the Internship Program, students must be:
1) enrolled in an accredited high school, home school; four-year college/university, community college, junior college; professional; technical, vocational or trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying educational institution; AND
2) working toward a qualifying degree or certificate.
The Internship Program is administered by the hiring agency, which can hire interns on a temporary basis for up to one year for an initial period, or for an indefinite period to complete the educational requirement.
Program Completion and Potential Conversion
Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program if they are eligible for conversion. To be eligible, interns must have:
- completed at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
- completed their degree or certificate requirements;
- met the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted;
- met agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement; AND
- performed their job successfully.
